A lecture by Professor Surendra P. Shah, Honored with Academy Memberships in Five Nations, was successfully held
On January 10th, a lecture hosted by the Shanghai Key Laboratory of Urban Design and Urban Science (LOUD), in conjunction with Shanghai Tongmu Architecture Consulting Co., Ltd., was successfully held at New York University Shanghai. This lecture featured a special invitation to Professor Surendra P. Shah, Academician of the Engineering Academies of China, the United States, Russia, India, and Greece. Professor Shah provided an in-depth sharing on the cutting-edge topic of low-carbon concrete in the context of climate change.
Prof. Surendra P. Shah, a leading international expert in cement and concrete materials research, is currently an academician of the Engineering Academies of China, the United States, Russia, India, and Greece. He holds the title of Professor Walter P. Murphy in the Department of Civil Engineering at Northwestern University, USA, and serves as Director of the Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the USA. He is also an Honorary Member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and the International Union of Laboratories and Experts in Construction Materials (RILEM). Additionally, he holds Honorary Professor and Guest Professor positions at world-renowned universities such as The University of Texas at Austin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, National University of Singapore, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Southeast University. Professor Shah has made outstanding contributions to fields including fiber-reinforced concrete composites, nanotechnology, constitutive models for concrete fracture theory, and non-destructive testing. He has been honored with 43 titles from international professional organizations such as ACI in the USA and RILEM in France, published over 500 papers, co-edited and published 3 monographs, and edited 24 proceedings of international symposiums. He is recognized as one of the ten most influential experts in the global cement industry.
During the lecture, Prof. Surendra P. Shah provided attendees with an insightful introduction to the applications of carbon-aware concrete and functional materials in addressing climate change, particularly in enhancing concrete performance, accelerating carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), and exploring carbon-negative supplementary cementitious materials. He emphasized the current progress made in these areas, including improving concrete performance, accelerating CCUS, and exploring carbon-negative materials. Furthermore, he outlined the future research directions and application prospects in the field of carbon-aware concrete and functional materials.
After the lecture, the attendees responded enthusiastically and felt greatly enriched. They posed questions about the future economic benefits, technical challenges, and potential for promoting resource recycling of low-carbon concrete. Professor Surendra P. Shah patiently and thoroughly answered the attendees' questions, and both sides engaged in in-depth and productive exchanges.
In a warm and lively atmosphere, the lecture host specially mentioned that this year coincided with the 90th birthday of Academician Surendra P. Shah, making this moment particularly significant. The attendees extended their sincerest blessings to Academician Surendra P. Shah, thanking him for his outstanding contributions to the field of building materials science over the years and for his tremendous efforts in promoting and applying low-carbon concrete technology.
